Eagles Show More Imrpovement in Wednesday's Practice

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - It was a sunny afternoon for the Southern Miss football team here Wednesday as they got another solid practice in at the Joe P. Park Facility.
In shoulder pads and shorts, the Golden Eagles went for two hours in their continued preparation for their season opener next Thursday, Sept. 2, at South Carolina, in front of a nationally televised audience.
Following the second scrimmage last week, third-year Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora said he saw his team improve between the first and second scrimmages but wanted to see his team improve even more heading into Thursday's mock game. From all indications, Fedora has been seeing that on the practice fields.
"We had another good day," Fedora said. "Yesterday was good, but I thought today was a little bit better. We are making steps in the right direction (for the season opener)."
The Golden Eagles now will go through a mock game Thursday afternoon at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium in the team's final dress rehearsal for the 2010 opener.
"It will be exactly like a game, "Fedora added. "Every phase will be covered from the pregame meal, to chapel, to coming in at halftime to make adjustments. It will be a good situation for our team to be put in being a week from the (opening) game."
Fedora also said following practice that both junior Danny Hrapmann and freshman Corey Acosta were still battling for the place kicking duties and that a determination on that spot would be probably decided later in the week.
Other spots were still being fought for as well including on offense, where there were still battles going on at left tackle, wide receiver, running back and tight end. On defense, the situation was more settled but Fedora stated that the competition at cornerbacks was still pretty heavy.
