HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went through a controlled situational scrimmage at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium here Friday afternoon in the Golden Eagles' final big scrimmage of the preseason.
Third-year coach Larry Fedora, who called the previous day's workout sloppy, enjoyed the scrimmage that was conducted in shoulder pads and shorts and also featured the season-opening opponent South Carolina's fight song being repeatedly played over the sound system.
Even though he acknowledged that the Golden Eagles still have plenty of work left to do prior to the Sept. 2, opener with the Gamecocks, Fedora thought it was a productive scrimmage from both sides of the football.
"It was good," Fedora said of the scrimmage. "I don't think we put the football on the ground. We took care of the football offensively and there were some really good things. There was quite a bit of improvement from the first scrimmage."
Fedora also praised the work of the defensive backs and the improvement shown by that unit since at this point last year.
"They are way ahead of where they were last year at this time," Fedora said. "They made some plays again today. I don't think we had a busted coverage and we didn't turn anybody loose like we did for the scrimmage before and they made some plays on the ball today."
