HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The third year of the Larry Fedora coaching era at Southern Miss officially began today as the 2010 Golden Eagle football team reported to campus in preparation for fall camp, which begins Tuesday afternoon with the team's first scheduled practice.
The first-day routine for the squad included equipment issue, medical matters, moving into housing, as well as attending a pair of administrative meetings.
The Golden Eagle's first five practices will serve as the NCAA-mandated acclimation period. The acclimation period went into effect by the NCAA in 2004 with the intent to lessen injuries and heat-related illnesses. The period is free of multi-practice days that were common in college football prior to the legislation.
Southern Miss will hit the practice field for the first time in shorts and helmets on Tuesday and Wednesday before putting on shoulder pads on Friday and then going to full pads for Sunday's practice. The first two-a-day practice will take place on Monday, August 9.
Fans can meet the 2010 team at the annual Eagle Fanfare, which will be held this Saturday, Aug. 7, at Reed Green Coliseum. Admission is $5, while children eight and under are admitted free.
Southern Miss opens the 2010 season on Sept. 2, as when they take on South Carolina on a Thursday night nationally televised contest. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles home opener is the following week, Sept. 11, and tickets are available in person through the Southern Miss ticket office, over the phone at 1.800-844-TICK or at southernmiss.com for single game or season tickets.
