HATTIESBURG, Miss - Instead of spending the last afternoon of summer camp in the heat of the practice field, Southern Miss football coach Larry Fedora gave his team a surprise Tuesday afternoon with a movie in a nice air-conditioned theater.
The day did not start that way as the Golden Eagles practiced for two hours in the morning in shoulder pads and shorts. It was the third and final two-a-day practice scheduled for summer camp. The afternoon practice was the 17th since the team reported to campus on Aug. 2.
For Fedora, it is a way to reward his team for working hard during the preseason and it is not the first time he has done this.
During his first fall camp at Southern Miss in 2008, the Golden Eagle mentor did the same thing at the end of summer camp. This time, though, he used a little trickery.
Like 2008, he sent his team out for the afternoon workout. As the team began their workout, a pair of buses pulled up to the practice field gate getting the players hopes up like two years prior. Still, practice continued and after a couple of minutes the buses drove off.
The departure, though, was short-lived as a trip was made just around the block. After the buses reappeared, Fedora then blew his whistle telling his team "you have one minute to get on the buses" during the middle of an early team period.
This was followed by screams of joy and a mad rush by 100-plus football players to the two awaiting vehicles. Then, it was off to a local theater, The Grand 18, just a couple miles from campus.
The movie of choice by Coach Fedora was The Expendables starting Sylvester Stallone.
The Golden Eagles take off Wednesday as the fall semester begins at the university, before returning to the practice field Thursday afternoon.
Southern Miss opens the 2010 season, Sept. 2, at South Carolina.
