HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went through its first major scrimmage here Saturday afternoon, going through 115 plays at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
An early afternoon shower pushed the event from the practice field to the game field and the Golden Eagles worked through a drizzling rain during the entire scrimmage.
It was a typical first scrimmage for Fedora as he saw some good things an d bad things, including three fumbles, but was pleased overall with the outing.
"It looked liked the quarterbacks took care of it fairly well as I didn't see them throw many balls to the opposite colored jerseys so that was good," Fedora said. "The defense made some nice plays in some (tough) situations as well."
Austin Davis, in his first action since his injury against UAB in the fifth game of last season, threw for 217 yards on 18-of-26 passing with an interception and three touchdown passes.
The junior from Meridian, Miss., hit Francisco Llanos on a six-yard strike, while also hooking up with DeAndre Brown for a 60-yard touchdown catch and Jonathan Massey for a five-yard score.
Massey caught four passes for 67 yards, including grabs of 24 and 20 yards, catching Fedora's eye after practice.
"He is a senior and he has a lot of ownership in the program and he knows how important is," Fedora said. "He has put a lot of time and effort into things."
Desmond Johnson led the rushing attack with 74 yards on 12 carries with touchdown runs of 27 and eight yards, while Kendrick Hardy added 47 yards on 16 carries. V.J. Floyd added 33 yards on seven rushes and a 10-yard scoring run.
On the defensive side, Jamie Collins registered an interception to go along with forcing a safety and tallying a sack. The sack was one of seven on the day for the Golden Eagle defense.
"The kid is a playermaker," Fedora said of Collins. "He is just a football player. It doesn't matter what position you put him in (he is going to get the job done)."
There were few bumps and bruises in the scrimmage but it appeared there were no serious injuries, according to Fedora.
The Golden Eagles return to practice, Sunday, with a late afternoon workout for their 14th session of summer camp.
