HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team utilized the second half of Wednesday afternoon's practice to go through a situation-style scrimmage at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
Third-year coach Larry Fedora used the scrimmage to give his guys some extra live work as they completed their seventh of 15 practices of the spring which will culminate, April 10, with the spring game.
"We basically had half a practice with a scrimmage-type situation," Fedora said. "The first half was our normal practice with install and individual (work) and the second half with a scrimmage to give some guys some more reps in a more live-type situation."
Quarterback Martevious Young was 12-of-21 for 87 yards with a three-yard touchdown throw to Ryan Hanks in a goal line situation. Chris Campbell added 7-of-10 completions for 107 yards, including a 61-yard scoring strike to Kevin Bolden and a nine-yard toss to Francisco Llanos in the back corner of the end zone.
Fedora also praised the running back corps as Kendrick Hardy rushed for 62 yards on 10 carries, which included a six-yard scoring run and a three-yard TD rush during the goal line portion of the scrimmage. V.J. Floyd added four rushes for eight yards and a three-yard rushing score, while Desmond Johnson tallied 15 yards on eight carries to go along with a three-yard rushing touchdown during a goal line period. Tracy Lampley added 43 yards on five rushes and a 25-yard rushing TD.
"They have all made some plays," Fedora said of the team's running backs. "Kendrick Hardy really made some nice plays (today), ran really hard and broke some tackles while showing some glimpses that he can be a really good football player for us."
Bolden led the receivers with two catches for 69 yards, while Quentin Pierce added three receptions for 33 yards and Llanos tallied three catches for 22 yards.
On special teams, the Golden Eagles made five-of-six field goals on the day, as Danny Hrapmann converted kicks of 30 and 20 yards after missing a 48-yarder. Matthew Little made a 39-yard kick and Justin Estes was good from 30 yards.
"We put the ball through the uprights and we only had one missed field goal so that was a good thing," Fedora said of the kicking during the scrimmage. "We've made some progress (in this area). We haven't arrived yet, but we have made some progress."
On the defensive side, Korey Williams tallied an interception that he returned for a touchdown from 42 yards out to go along with a sack, while Justin Wilson added a fumble recovery. The Golden Eagles also tallied eight sacks as a team on the day.
Southern Miss returns to the practice field Friday on the Golden Eagle campus.
