HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Home games against both current Conference USA division champions, along with matchups with a Big 12 opponent and the Southwestern Athletic Conference winner highlight the 2010 Southern Miss football schedule released Tuesday.
The home schedule includes tilts against Prairie View A&M, Kansas, Marshall, East Carolina, UAB and Houston, while the Golden Eagles go on the road to South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Tulane, UCF and Tulsa.
"We are pleased to have another exciting and challenging schedule in 2010," said Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini. "Our fans will get a great complement of home games this season as we will play host to both league division champions from a year ago, East Carolina and Houston, as well as welcome Big 12 member Kansas and SWAC champion Prairie View A&M."
The Golden Eagles open the slate on the first night of the collegiate season with a national television game on ESPN, Thur., Sept. 2, at South Carolina. It will be the first meeting between the schools in football.
In another first meeting, Southern Miss opens the home portion of the schedule, Saturday, Sept. 11, to face SWAC champion Prairie View A&M, which finished 9-1 a year ago including a 30-24 victory over Alabama A&M in the league title game.
Then, Southern Miss welcomes Kansas to Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium for the first time in a Friday night game (Sept. 17), which is the second game of the campaign slated to be shown by ESPN.
"We are also excited to have Kansas come in for a national television contest on a Friday night," Giannini added. "I would like to thank the local high schools that have helped to make this possible as we realize what a big night for high school football it is in the state. Both Hattiesburg and Oak Grove High Schools are both off this weekend and Petal has an out of town game and may also move the contest to another night."
The Friday night telecast on ESPN is one of just five during the season that features a school from Conference USA and the Golden Eagles' Thursday appearance to open the season is the only time in 2010 the league will be featured on that night.
Following a Sept. 25 meeting at Louisiana Tech, the Golden Eagles return home for back-to-back games against Marshall, Oct. 2, and C-USA East Division winner and league champion, East Carolina, Oct. 9.
After a road tilt at Memphis on Oct. 16, the Golden Eagles enjoy an open date, Oct. 23, before returning home to face C-USA foe UAB on Oct. 30.
A couple of road tilts start the month of November when Southern Miss travels to Tulane (Nov. 6) and UCF (Nov. 13). The Golden Eagles then finish the home portion of its schedule, Nov. 20, versus C-USA West Division foe, Houston, before concluding the regular season with a trip to league opponent Tulsa (Nov. 27).
"We are pleased to have another challenging schedule for this program and one that features great home games," Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora said. "We continue to work hard this spring to get ready for our opener at South Carolina as well as the remainder of our schedule."
Game times and homecoming will be announced at a later date.
