HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball will participate in postseason play for the first time since 2001. The Golden Eagles will play in the second annual CollegeInsider.com Tournament
Southern Miss will travel to Ruston, La. to face Louisiana Tech this Thursday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
This will be the Golden Eagles' 11th postseason appearance. They last competed in postseason play in 2001 when the Golden Eagles competed in the National Invitation Tournament. Southern Miss lost to Mississippi State in the first round that year. Southern Miss has competed in two NCAA tournaments (1990, 1991) and has made eight NIT appearances (1981, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1995, 1998 and 2001).
The CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament is a single-elimination tournament, consisting of four rounds, with games played at on-campus sites as determined by seeding. The event features eight first-round games, four quarterfinal games, a semifinal round and then the championship game.
Bracketing is done geographically into multiple regions of the country to minimize missed class time. Brackets will be balanced competitively within each region.
Fox College Sports Network will broadcast the championship game of the CIT on March 30th. All other games will be available via online broadcast on FoxCollegeSports.com.
Last year, Old Dominion defeated Bradley, 66-62, in the inaugural CIT championship game.
Southern Miss enters the CollegeInsider.com Tournament with a 20-13 record. The Golden Eagles are coming off a berth in the Semifinals of the GMC Sierra Conference USA Tournament. The Black and Gold are led by junior forward Gary Flowers, who is averaging 15.0 points and 8.3 rebounds. Flowers was recently named to the Conference USA All-Tournament Team after recording three straight double-doubles, averaging 18.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.
The Southern Miss ticket office will be taking orders for the game. Tickets are $15 and can be picked up in Ruston at the Thomas Assembly Center Will Call. Fans can order tickets through the Southern Miss Ticket Office by calling 1-800-844-TICK.
