HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A heavy 15-minute rain shower toward the end of practice did not hinder the Southern Miss football team's preparation for this weekend's matchup with Conference USA East Division foe, UAB.
Kickoff is set for 11 a.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium and the contest has been designated as the school's annual Black Out game. Shirts for the game can be purchased at area retailers.
Third-year coach Larry Fedora said following the two-hour workout that the team continued to put in its game plan, despite the pesky weather at the end of the session.
"I don't think they pay attention to the weather anymore," said Fedora, who has continually stresses to his team that the external factors, like weather, should not matter in the team's preparation for a football game.
The Golden Eagles, coming off an off week, look to win its second-straight game and also rebound from a 30-17 defeat to the Blazers at historic Legion Field in Birmingham last season. That off week for the team has helped with a squad, which has seen its share of injuries this season, get somewhat healthier.
"We're a lot healthier than we have been in the last four weeks," said Fedora. One player expected to return from injury this weekend is sophomore offensive lineman Joe Duhon. The Lake Charles, La., native has battled with fellow sophomore Austin Quattrochi at the right guard position, who started there during Duhon's recent absence.
Fedora said it has been a good competition at that position and that both players have seen reps there in practice since Duhon's return.
"I am sure both of them will get some snaps," said Fedora. "They were doing that before (the injury)."
Tickets still remain for Saturday as it will also be "Take a Kid to a Game" day. Golden Eagle fans are asked to look for gold coupons around town which offers a free kid admission with the purchase of an adult ticket.
The Black Daggers will parachute in during the pregame festivities and the 2010 Conference USA baseball champion Golden Eagles will be recognized on the field as will the 1970 Southern Miss football team during the game.
Fans can purchase tickets by going online at SouthernMiss.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. up until Friday.
On game day, The Golden Eagle ticket offices at the northwest and southwest sides of the stadium will open at 8 a.m., all the way through halftime.
