HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Kickoff for the 2009 football season is just days away and that was evident as the Golden Eagles went through practice Thursday afternoon at the Joe. P. Park Practice Fields on the campus on the University of Southern Mississippi.
The black and gold worked out in helmets and shorts for just over two hours with the scout teams donning the opponents jersey color for the first time this season. Today the scout team players wore purple to simulate Alcorn State, each week they will swap to one of the primary colors of that week's opponent.
"Everything we did today was focused on Alcorn State," second year head coach Larry Fedora said. "We put the game plan in and there are some new things the guys still have to pick up but overall it was a good day of work."
The Golden Eagles have spent a lot of time recently watching film on the Braves but Fedora says there is an unknown factor of what you opponent may do in the season opener.
"The tough thing is not really knowing what they are going to do because it is the first game, so you probably over prepare."
Throughout fall camp the Golden Eagles helmets were without decals, but today a handful of players sported the traditional logo and stripes on their headwear, another sign that the season opener is quickly approaching.
Southern Miss will return to the practice field tomorrow and hold a mock game on Saturday where they will simulate everything that happens on game day from Eagle Walk to the post game routine and everything in between.
All practices and scrimmages are closed to the public.
