HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team used most of its two-hour practice Wednesday in Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium as a special teams practice.
Second-year coach Larry Fedora said his team used the workout to go over different aspects of this phase of the game.
"Today was basically a special teams scrimmage," Fedora said. "We covered every phase of the special teams with full speed reps."
The Golden Eagles, which have worked hard on this area of the game during the fall preseason, have continued to improve over the first three weeks of practice.
"We have a good understanding of our special teams at this point," Fedora added. "The team is still not there, but is close. We are starting to lock down on a special team game plan and who will play in a game."
Southern Miss also continues to put in its game plan for its season-opening opponent, Alcorn State, next Saturday, Sept. 5, at The Rock. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
"Right now, we have about 75 percent of the game plan for Alcorn State done and after tomorrow we should be around 90 percent complete," Fedora said.
Tickets still remain for the opener against Alcorn State, as well as season and flex plan options. To order, call 1-800-844-TICK (8425), go online at SouthernMiss.com or go by the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office, Monday-through-Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
