Football Player Passes Away in Gun Accident

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss freshman football player Peter Wilkes has died Friday morning as a result of a gun accident at his home in Union City, Tenn.

The accident occurred Thursday night and he died Friday morning.

"We are obviously shocked and devastated to hear the news about Peter's passing, " Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora said. "Peter was an integral part of this football program and our thoughts and prayers are with his family members during this difficult time."

Wilkes was a walk-on punter, who was at home during the University's fall break. He was not a member of the travel party for this week's game.
