Southern Miss Completes First Scrimmage

The Southern Miss football team scrimmaged for the first time this season Saturday afternoon, working out for just over two hours at Carlisle- Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
"There was some great competition today," head coach Larry Fedora said. "We had some good things on both sides of the ball but still have some work to do as well."
The Golden Eagles ran nearly 100 plays in the scrimmage working different game situations and field positions.
Both Austin Davis and Martevious Young had a good scrimmage under center for the Golden Eagles. Davis was 9-13 for 119 yards with one touchdown pass of 21 yards and one interception. Young was 10-17 for 199 yards and two touchdown passes of 25 and 80 yards. He also added a 30 yard TD pass in late situation drills that was not counted toward his stats.
"We did some good things today offensively," Davis said. "I think that today really showed us the areas we need to improve the most."
Junior college transfer Bubba Kirksey led the offensive charge with 119 all-purpose yards as he rushed 10 times for 39 yards including 6 yard touchdown. He also caught at 80 TD pass from Young.
Tory Harrison rushed 12 times for 60 yards and Davis added in 50 yards rushing on nine attempts.
Freshman DeAndre Brown caught three passes for 76 yards including a 25 yard touchdown pass from Young. He also scored on a 30 yard reception late in the situational periods that did not count toward his stats.
Ed Morgan reeled in two catches for 26 yards including a 21 yard TD from Davis.
The Golden Eagles will take Sunday off before returning to the practice field Monday afternoon.
Southern Miss opens the 2008 season vs. Louisiana-Lafayette at "The Rock" on August 30.
