HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss football coach Larry Fedora announced Wednesday that former NFL standout Kris Mangum will serve as a replacement assistant coach for Barney Farrar, who will have limited duties while undergoing treatments for a health issue.
Per NCAA rules, Mangum can serve as a replacement coach as long as there is no duplication of duties between the two coaches.
"We are pleased to have a person of Kris' character and quality that will help us through this situation," Fedora said. "Obviously, our thoughts are with Barney as he goes through his treatments."
Mangum, a native of Magee, Miss., and a former Ole Miss tight end who lettered for the school from 1994-1996, went on to have a 10-year NFL career with the Carolina Panthers (1997-2006) and caught 151 passes over 126 games for 1,424 yards and nine touchdown receptions.
Mangum, who currently lives in Petal, will coach the tight ends.
