HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss head softball coach Howard Dobson announced Friday the addition of California standout pitcher Courtney Ramos (Hilmar, Calif.) to the 2008-09 Southern Miss softball signing class.
"We are looking forward to getting Courtney on campus," Dobson said. "She is the type of pitcher who will get her fair share of strikeouts. She also is the type of pitcher who will have her team and defense behind her because she keeps the ball low in the zone and gets a lot of ground balls. She will definitely help in the rotation. She was one of those players under the radar and we are glad to have her."
Ramos was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Paul Willis at Hilmar High School. She earned her team's MVP three times, including Lady Jacket of the Year as a senior. She received Western Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player and an All-League first teamer as well as Modesto Bee all-district selection.
As a senior, Ramos posted a 17-6 record with a 0.49 ERA. She struck out 332 batters in 174 innings pitched, including 11 shutouts. She ranked eighth in California in strikeouts, while helping to lead her team to the state section semi-finals while garnering California High School Small School All-State accolades.
Ramos currently plays travel ball with the California Grapettes and Coach Todd Clark.
She is the daughter of Kelly Amaral and Steve Ramos.
Southern Miss has now signed seven players for the 2008-09 season, including Ashley Razey (Lawrenceville, Ga./Buford HS), Britney Dinelt (Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson HS), Leslie LeJune (Houston, Texas/Memorial HS), Casey Jo Matthews (Acworth, Ga./Harrison HS), Stephanie Shiflet (Sugar Land, Texas/ Clements HS) and Chanell Thurman (Yuba City, Calif./Sutter Union HS).
