HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Former Southern Miss football player Matthew Chatelain (Metairie, La.) received a 2008 All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year accolade by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) in an announcement by the organization.
The NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year program recognizes those collegiate athletes, whose athletic accomplishments, in the opinion of their strength coach, reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning.
These athletes are also recognized for their academic and personal accomplishments and their integrity as student-athletes. Power Systems, Inc., is the official sponsor of this program.
"Matt is a tireless worker who is always looking for new cutting edge ways to train himself," said Southern Miss Strength and Conditioning Coach Scott Bennett. "He gives nothing but his very best effort every day on and off the field. Matt is an example of what this award is all about."
The 6-foot-2, 245 former defensive lineman for the Golden Eagles, provided lift numbers of 375 in the bench press, 345 on the power clean and 555 on the squat, while registering a 36 vertical jump and a 4.59 in his 40-yard dash time.
Chatelain finished his Southern Miss career with 122 total tackles, 27.5 for loss and 14.5 sacks. He added seven passes broken up, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. He was a first team Conference USA selection on the defensive line this past season for the Golden Eagles who recorded their 14th-straight winning season and made its sixth consecutive postseason bowl appearance.
