Softball Entertains Marshall In a Three-Game Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball hosts Marshall in a three-game series this weekend with game one of the double header set for 1 p.m., Saturday, followed by game two at 3, at the USM Softball Complex.
Southern Miss (22-22, 6-9 C-USA) is coming off a 4-0 loss to South Alabama in which four different recorded a hit. The Jaguar defense did not allow a base runner past second base.
Megan Hill leads the team with a .325 batting average, four home runs and a team-best 26 RBIs with Jennifer Fox next at .303 average. Kristin Pilgrim follows with a .289 average with a team-leading nine doubles.
Five Lady Eagles have posted a 3.31 team earned run average with junior Samantha Davis (12-7) leading the way with a 2.41 ERA over 128.0 innings pitched. Freshman Hannah Griffin (3-1) is sporting an ERA of 2.67, as she has a pitching mark of 3-1, while fellow freshman Lana Vaughn with a 4-5 record and a 2.89 ERA.
Marshall (21-25, 8-8) comes into the game on a three-game winning streak. Senior Rachel Folden leads the Herd with a league-leading .433 batting average, followed by Rachael Sofie with a .378 average. Caitlyn Jackson is sporting a .340 average as well. Autumn Mitchell (8-4) paces the pitching staff with a team-low 2.86 ERA in 71.0 innings with 71 strikeouts and only 18 walks. Jackson has worked 153.1 innings with a 3.83 ERA and a 10-14 record.
These games mark the eighth, ninth and 10th meetings between the two teams in a series dating back to the 2006 season. The Lady Eagles hold a 5-2 lead in the series, including a series sweep last season in Huntington.
Following the Marshall series, the Lady Eagles hit the road for their final road games, beginning with in-state rival Mississippi State in a mid-week single game and then on to El Paso for a C-USA series with UTEP (4/26-27).
