HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss went through a 1 hour, 45 minute scrimmage at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium to complete its second week of spring practice.
First-year coach Larry Fedora said the scrimmage lasted "120-130 snaps." The Golden Eagles began offensive series at different points of the field and finished the scrimmage with a goal line period. The team also put in some work in its punt and field goal portion of its special teams.
"The guys got after it today," Fedora said. "The defense showed great effort as they forced some turnovers."
On offense, rising junior Damion Fletcher rushed for 43 yards on 21 carries and caught two passes for 23 yards. The Biloxi, Miss., native added a rushing touchdown during the goal line drill.
V.J. Floyd added 27 yards on 10 carries, while transfer Bubba Kirksey added 30 yards on eight carries with three rushing scores during the goal line period of the drill.
Quarterback Austin Davis threw for 91 yards and a touchdown in the scrimmage, while Martevious Young passed for 78 yards and Todd Wilson converted all three passes for 35 yards.
The Golden Eagles had 12 receivers catch passes including Torris Magee with four catches for 33 yards, Johdrick Morris with a pair of grabs for 35 yards and Kirskey added two receptions for 29 yards, including an 18-yard scoring strike from Davis. Kane Wommack also contributed with two catches for 32 yards.
As for the defense, Kevin North registered a pass broken up and a fumble recovery, while Eddie Hicks notched a sack and a big hit on fourth-and-one on Fletcher for a no gain to end one series.
Logan Hickman and Andrew Burns also added sacks, while Demar Dotson was credited with a fumble recovery. Roshaad Byrd notched a tackle for loss and Ivory Bradshaw, who missed all of last season with an injury, added a pass broken up.
Fedora said that he wants to see his team continue to improve with each practice and stay injury-free as they head into the April 12 Spring Game and the 2008 season.
"We are getting better every day," Fedora added. "As long as we do that we will be fine."
