HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss sophomore Jeremy Wise earned Second Team All-Conference USA honors in a vote by the league's 12 coaches and various media, announced today by the league office in Irving, Texas.
It is the sophomore's second straight all-conference selection.
Wise led the Golden Eagles this season with 19.0 points and 4.2 assists, en route to placing third on the sophomore scoring list. He is also the first Golden Eagle to record 500 points in back-to-back seasons since Clarence Weatherspoon from 1989 to 1992.
On February 20 against SMU, Wise became the second fastest player in Southern Miss history to reach 1,000 career points.
The Jackson, Miss. native is the only player to start all 30 games for the Golden Eagles this season, and has scored in double-figures in 28 of 30 games, including 12 straight. He has also scored 20-plus points in 13 games, including a career-high 33 at Alabama on November 23.
Wise currently ranks fifth in the conference in both scoring and assists, as well as sixth in free throw percentage. In the regular season finale at Marshall, the 6-foot-2 guard tied a conference record with his 115th made free throw in conference play.
Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts and Derrick Rose were named to the first team. Joining them are Stefon Jackson of UTEP, Houston's Robert McKiver and Robert Vaden of UAB.
Joining Wise on the second team were Memphis' Joey Dorsey, Tulane's David Gomez, Jermaine Taylor of UCF and Ben Uzoh of Tulsa.
On the third team was Dion Dowell of Houston, Robert Dozier of Memphis, Marshall's Markell Humphrey, Jon Killen of SMU and Lawrence Kinnard of UAB.
Southern Miss, which earned the fifth seed, opens play at the Conference USA Tournament Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles will face 12th-seeded Rice. The game can be heard on the Southern Miss/ISP network.
