Men's Basketball Closes Road Trip at Houston

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss closes out a two-game road trip this Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles look for their sixth win in the last seven games when they face Houston in a 7:00 p.m. (CT) contest at Hofheinz Pavillion.
The Golden Eagles and Houston will face each other for the 27th time in a series that dates back to 1968. The Cougars lead the series, 14-12, and have won eight of the last 11 meetings. In Houston, UH leads 9-4, and have won four of the last five meetings. Last year, Southern Miss defeated the Cougars, 74-69, in Hattiesburg. However, Houston returned the favor, defeating Golden Eagles, 62-59, in the second round of the Conference USA Tournament.
Southern Miss is led by guard Jeremy Wise. The sophomore leads the team in scoring with 19.0 points per game. Right behind him is freshman R.L. Horton with 12.3, junior Courtney Beasley with 11.3 and sophomore Sai'Quon Stone at 8.4. Gjio Bain leads Southern Miss on the boards, pulling down 5.8 rebounds a game.
Houston enters today's game with a 20-6 record, 9-3 in conference play. The Cougars are led by guard Robert McKiver. The senior leads the team with 21.8 points and is third with 4.1 rebounds. Senior guard Dion Dowell is averaging 11.2 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds. Senior guard Lanny Smith is also averaging 3.9 assists.
The Cougars are coming off a 71-62 win over Rice. Kelvin Lewis led UH with 22 points. McKiver had 18 points, and DeShaun Williams added 11. Dowell added nine rebounds.
Southern Miss returns to Hattiesburg for a two-game homestand this Saturday. The Golden Eagles will face second-ranked Memphis, March 1, at 3:00 p.m. (CT) at Reed Green Coliseum. The contest will be broadcast on CSTV.
