Softball Team Hits The Road For Second-Straight Tournament

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team will take the road for a second-consecutive weekend to participate in the K-Club Classic, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15-16, at Bailey Park in Kennesaw, Ga.
Southern Miss (3-2) squares off with Appalachian State (0-0) in the tournament opener at 9 a.m. (CT) Friday. It marks the first meeting between the two schools and will be the season opener for the Apps. The Lady Eagles follow with a game against Eastern Kentucky (0-0) at 11 a.m. (CT). This will also be the season opener for Eastern Kentucky. Southern Miss then plays host Kennesaw (4-0) on Saturday at 11 a.m., to be followed at either 1 or 3 p.m.
The Lady Eagles defeated Nicholls State in a midweek game, 5-3. In that game, Jennifer Fox and Logan James had a 2-of-3 night at the plate. Kristin Pilgrim, Megan Hill and Brandi Alonzo each recorded their first doubles of the season. Freshman Meghan Harbuck (1-0) pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and only one earned run, while striking out five.
Fox leads the team in batting, boasting a .583 average with seven hits, including one home run and four runs batted in. James is next with a .400 average. At least 10 different players have recorded a hit, including Hill and Pilgrim with four hits apiece and Allison Bullard with three.
Freshmen pitchers Lana Vaughn, Hannah Griffin and Meghan Harbuck recorded a win in their collegiate debuts. Vaughn (1-1) and Griffin (1-0) got their first wins against Troy, while Harbuck recorded her win against Nicholls. Junior Samantha Davis has worked five innings this season.

Southern Miss opens its home portion of its schedule, Feb. 20, against in-state rival Jackson in a double-header. Game times are set for 5 and 7 p.m.
