HATTIESBURG, Miss. - When Damion Fletcher takes the field on Saturday against UAB, his head is sure to be filled to the brim with game plans, routes and anticipation. What he won't be thinking about, as he has said all season long, is the record book.
Fletcher, the 5-foot-10 junior running back from Biloxi, Miss., has excited fans and scared opposing defenses ever since his arrival in Hattiesburg with his quick reads, elusive running and hard-nosed attack mentality. Yet with all his success, Fletcher always puts the team first, offering instead to trade his name in the record books for a win for the Golden Eagles.
Through the first eight games in his third season as a Golden Eagle, Fletcher has amassed 969 total yards of rushing with seven touchdowns. He needs just 31 yards to become the first-ever Southern Miss running back to run for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Fletcher currently ranks No. 10 in the FBS in rushing yards per game.
For his career, Fletcher is already the leading rusher in Southern Miss history and he continues to build his lead. For his career, Fletcher has 3,943 yards and needs just 57 yards to become the first Southern Miss running back to ever tally 4,000 rushing yards, another milestone that Fletcher looks to reach against UAB.
As a sophomore, Fletcher rushed for 1,586 yards, a school record. During his breakout freshman year, Fletcher ran for 1,388 yards, yet again a school-best for a freshman.
He will look to expand his list of records on Saturday, but more importantly help the Eagles in their game against UAB, Saturday, at 7 p.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium.
