HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team completed its final two-a-day practice, today, with an early morning workout at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility, followed by an evening workout at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles began the last of five scheduled two-a-days by taking the field at 7:35 a.m., for a two-hour stint in full pads.
The preparations were concluded with a two-hour practice at "The Rock," beginning at 6 p.m. The workout featured the team in shorts and shoulder pads as they prepped their pre-game warm-up, before following with two-minute drills and kicking drills.
"The effort was pretty good tonight," Head Coach Jeff Bower said. "We didn't go very long, but it was pretty good."
Freshman running back Antwain Easterling (Miami, Fla.), who sat out the two workouts during the day, awaited the status of his freshman academic eligibility certification by the NCAA that would allow him to continue to participate in preseason practice. Bower said that they haven't received further word after the evening session but were hoping to hear from the NCAA on Tuesday on Easterling's status.
The Golden Eagles will resume practice on Tuesday at 3:25 p.m., before classes begin on Wednesday. The team will have two more afternoon workouts on Wednesday and Thursday and a Friday morning workout, followed by an off-weekend.
Southern Miss opens the season on September 1, hosting Tennessee-Martin in a 6 p.m. contest at M.M. Roberts Stadium. For tickets, call the Southern Miss Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or via the internet at www.SouthernMiss.com.
