HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Athletic Director Richard Giannini announced today that football season ticket sales for the 2007 season have exceeded sales for the previous year.
"We are pleased that we have already sold as many season tickets as we did last year and we still have three weeks left before our first home game," Giannini said. "Our ticket office sells several hundred season tickets per week and our department feels upbeat about the opportunity to break the all-time sales record here at Southern Miss.
"We've almost sold 13,000 season tickets at this point, so we only need to sell about 300 per week to break our all-time record."
The all-time record of 13,857 was set in 2004.
Most of the preseason prognosticators have the Golden Eagles finishing at the top of the C-USA East Division and one publication, The Sporting News, ranks Southern Miss No. 24 in the country during the preseason.
According to Southern Miss Deputy Director of Athletics, Scott Carr, the excitement around campus and in the community is one that has people looking more forward to the season than in previous years.
"There is a real buzz amongst our fan base for the upcoming season," Carr said. "Plus, we've received great support from our local business community as they are purchasing tickets for their customers and employees to show their appreciation for their support and hard work."
Southern Miss opens its 2007 campaign, Sept. 1, against Tennessee-Martin as that tilt will be the first of six games at "The Rock" this season.
