HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Southern Miss took advantage of two fielding errors by Marshall third baseman Samantha Rodriguez to score two runs in the top of the third inning to edge C-USA rival Marshall 2-1, today, at Dorothy "Dot" Hicks Field.
Logan James led off the third inning for the Lady Eagles, hitting a single to right center. On the next play, Megan Hill reached first on Rodriguez's first error of the inning, which sent James to second base, before both players advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Jennifer Fox. James scored when Lauren Castellvi grounded out to shortstop followed by a hard shot to third base from Kristin Pilgrim, causing Rodriguez's second error and scoring Hill to give Southern Miss the lead and all the offense it needed.
"I'm extremely pleased with the way our young team came through in that kind of situation by coming back with two runs to win," Head Coach Gay McNutt said. "I was especially pleased with Sam's (Samantha Davis) location and the way she worked her curve ball in important counts in the ball game. She's really had to battle the entire season, and today it paid off."
Marshall scored its solo run in the bottom of the second inning when designated player Caitlyn Jackson singled to left field, stole second and advanced home in a single by Gina Guzzo.
Southern Miss (12-26, 3-6 C-USA) recorded three hits, one each from Brandi Alonzo, James and Pilgrim, while Marshall (22-18, 6-7 C-USA) finished with five.
Samantha Davis (2-8) notched her second win of the season, while Abby Harter (11-10) was credited with the loss.
