Softball Hosts Houston This Weekend to Begin C-USA Play

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team will host Houston this weekend to begin Conference USA action, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 10, and a single game on Sunday, March 11.
Houston owns a 15-11 advantage over Southern Miss since the two teams first met in 2001. The last meeting was in 2006, in which the Lady Cougars recorded a 7-1 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Southern Miss (7-13) enters the weekend series, coming off of a 9-1 win over the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday. Houston (17-9), who was picked to finish No. 1 in C-USA, is coming off of back-to-back losses from Texas A&M on Wednesday and is 0-3 when playing away.
Defensively, the Lady Eagles are led by junior pitcher Shea Naramore (6-13), who has recorded a 7.27 ERA in 104.0 innings pitched with 40 strikeouts. Houston is led by C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year Angel Shamblin (10-4), who has recorded a 1.03 ERA in 95.0 innings pitched with 118 strikeouts.
On offense, Southern Miss is led by freshmen Brandi Alonzo, Megan Hill, Logan James and junior Allison Bullard. Alonzo has recorded a .396 batting average with three doubles, one triple, a home run and nine RBIs, while Hill is hitting .389 with five doubles, three triples, six home runs and 20 RBIs. James, who hit a two-run homer to give the Lady Eagle the win over Southeastern La., has notched a .296 batting average with six doubles, five home runs and 14 RBIs, while Bullard is hitting .255 with two doubles, three home runs and 18 RBIs.
Saturday's action is set to begin at 1 p.m., with the second game beginning at approximately 3 p.m.
