HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss went through a crisp two-hour practice today at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility in preparation for its homecoming contest against SMU, Saturday, at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised live nationally on CSTV.
The Golden Eagles got good news on the prognosis of senior quarterback Stephen Reaves, who sustained a strained oblique on his right side prior to the Rice game.
"He says he is feeling good," said Southern Miss coach Jeff Bower, who said at this point would be the team's starting quarterback this weekend against the Mustangs. "That is a good thing."
Starter Jeremy Young also showed progress, but is still recovering from a high sprain to his right ankle suffered against Boise State on Sept. 27.
"Jeremy is getting better - still a little gimpy - but I am seeing some positives," Bower said.
Senior defensive end Robert Henderson, who has been out the last three practices because of a sprained right foot, is expected to return to practice, Wednesday, Bower said.
"We plan on getting him out there and will take a look at it," Bower added.
Bower also said that defensive coordinator Jay Hopson, who has missed practice this week and will not coach the game Saturday due to health reasons, spoke with the team prior to practice.
"He came and spoke to the squad briefly before we came out to practice today," Bower added "He is flying to Indianapolis tomorrow to the IU (Indiana University) Cancer Center, where Lance Armstrong had his procedures done."
The Golden Eagles continue their work for the Mustangs (1-4 overall, 0-1 C-USA), Wednesday, in an afternoon practice.
