HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss began its short week of preparation for its Conference USA tilt at UAB this weekend with a two-hour practice at the Joe P. Park Practice facility, here, Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles (4-4 overall, 3-2 C-USA) look to rebound from a 34-17 home loss to UCF last Sunday night. They play a Blazer squad that is 2-6 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Following practice, coach Jeff Bower said that senior quarterback Jeremy Young looked fine during the workout and that he was going to get the start this Saturday against the Blazers.
"He is healthy and he has shown that he is better with taking care of the football," Bower said. "Stephen has played really well, but the negative has been the turnovers. He is a good passer; he just has to make better decisions. I would think both of them will end up playing."
This will be the eighth meeting between the two schools in football with Southern Miss winning all seven previous meetings, although every game in the series has been close and five of those contests have been decided by five points or less.
"The games are always tight and they are always tough," Bower said. "They have always been like that. Our kids have a lot of respect for them. They all know that we have had to fight every time that we have played them."
Bower also said that he thought that some younger players were going to see some more playing time this weekend as well.
"We are going to play (redshirt freshman) Anthony Gray a little bit more," Bower added. "(Freshman) Antonio Leonard might get a few more snaps; guys that deserve to play will play."
Game time is set for 6 p.m., at historic Legion Field in Birmingham and will be televised regionally by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS). The game will also be available on the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network with affiliates throughout the state of Mississippi, as well as the Sirius Satellite Radio C-USA Game of the Week (channel 110). The Sirius feed will begin at 6 p.m., and carry the UAB broadcast.
