HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team finished its first day of on-the-field practice today at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
"For our first day I was very pleased," Head Coach Gay McNutt said. "We are young, and we are going to make some mistakes early. Overall we had a good first day."
A few Lady Eagles are currently suffering with injuries. Sophomore pitcher Samantha Davis, who is one of only two pitchers on the roster, has some numbness in her pitching arm and has experienced some swelling, but is expected to recover." Also, freshmen Brittany Wright is battling back from a knee surgery that she had in the fall. Freshmen Megan Hill is still recovering from a shoulder injury but will be listed as the team's designated player.
"Meagan will be our DP so we can keep her from throwing, we have to have her in the lineup offensively," McNutt said.
"Melissa Prouty, who is the lone senior on the Lady Eagles roster, is expected be a leader both on and off the field. Junior's Jennifer Fox, who is a team captain and Allison Bullard also have stepped up as leaders on the team. Hill has proven herself as a leader as a freshmen" McNutt added. "Overall, everyone on the team has the ability to be a leader."
The Lady Eagles open their spring season in Waco, Texas, at the Getterman Classic, which will be held February 9-11. For ticket information for Golden Eagle softball, call the Southern Miss Ticket Office at 1-800-844-TICK.
