HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The 2006 Southern Miss football preseason began today, as 104 total players (85 scholarships and 19 walk-ons) reported to campus to begin preseason work.
The only player missing was freshman defensive back/wide receiver/quarterback Brandon Trowbridge (6-2, 200, Desert Ridge HS/Gilbert, Ariz.), but he will report on campus on Saturday, bringing the total to 105.
Unlike last year, when Head Coach Jeff Bower and his staff brought the newcomers and selected veterans to campus early to give them some extra attention, all expected players reported to campus today. There will be separate sessions for the newcomers and returning players for the next several days, once practice begins tomorrow.
"I'm excited to get started," Bower said. "We've got everyone here and we're glad to have the players back on campus. We're going to get our newcomers acclimated to our system, with the separate sessions, but we will have the full team together to do a special teams period. We're ready to get a new season started."
The Golden Eagle newcomers hit the field for the first time at 2 p.m., on Friday. There will be a 20-minute special teams session with the full team, before the returning players practice. On Saturday, practice begins at 8 a.m., for the newcomers, with a full-team special teams period following, before the returners practice. There will be no practice on Sunday, before the newcomers hit the field at 9 a.m., on Monday, with a full-team special teams period following. The returning players then practice following that session.
The first full team practice is set for Tuesday, August 8 and the first two-a-day practice is set for Thursday, August 10.
Hattiesburg Fanfare is Saturday, August 12 and will take place at 6 p.m., in the Payne Center on campus.
Southern Miss opens the season on Sept. 2, with a 5 p.m., contest at Florida.
