HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team continued its preparations for Saturday's season opening game at Florida today, with a two-hour practice at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
"It was a good day," Head Coach Jeff Bower said. "We picked it up. We were a lot better mentally. From an execution standpoint, it was a lot better."
When asked if there were any changes to the depth chart, Bower said no changes have been made.
"Not really," Bower said. "That's not to say that something could happen. But right now, there are no changes."
On injuries, Bower said that redshirt junior Chris Clark has been limited in practice.
"We've held him out of some things," Bower said. "I guess he's one of my main concerns right now."
Bower also said C.J. Barrows missed today's practice.
"I don't know if Barrows can go," Bower said. "We don't know what's wrong with him. It's back where he had the hernia. He'll see the doctor tomorrow and then we'll know more about him."
Saturday's game marks the fifth meeting between Florida and Southern Miss, with Florida holding a 4-0 series advantage. It will be the first meeting since the 1997 season, a 21-6 Florida victory. The two teams first met back in 1973, with Florida winning a 14-13 contest in Tampa, Fla. The other two meetings came in the 1992 and 1994 seasons, with Florida winning 24-20 and 55-17 respectively.
Under Head Coach Jeff Bower, Southern Miss has posted a 9-6 record in season-opening games, including a 6-1 mark at home and 3-5 record on the road. In school history, Southern Miss is 59-30 in season-opening games, including a 39-5 record at home and 16-19 mark on the road.
Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m., and will be televised live on ESPN Game Plan. To order the broadcast, contact your local cable provider or satellite company, but you must have digital cable to receive the game. The game can be heard on the Southern Miss ISP Network, or by logging onto SouthernMiss.com.
