HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team completed its second two-a-day practice with a shortened morning practice, before closing the day with a two-hour workout at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility, as the team completed the first full week of preseason drills.
"Practice went pretty well," Head Coach Jeff Bower said. "We got some good work in."
Following practice, Bower announced some depth chart changes.
Freshman Rodney Gray has been moved to a starting wide receiver.
"Rodney has played with great effort," Bower said. "He did some good things. We are going to work Ralph Turner into the mix too and give him some more repetitions. Those two guys have played with a winning effort and have done some good things."
Bower also said that freshman running back Damion Fletcher will get some repetitions with the first-string offense.
"We will continue to rotate the running backs," Bower said. "But we are going to get him some repetitions with our first-string offense."
Redshirt junior Don Loehr has been moved to tight end, from defensive end.
"We were really thin there," Bower said. "Our short-yardage personnel also needed some help."
Redshirt sophomore running back C.J. Barrows (sprained knee) was also back on the practice field today.
"We're glad to see him back," Bower said.
The team will take part in Southern Miss Media Day on Sunday, which is closed to the public. The Golden Eagles will hold a big scrimmage on Monday night in M.M. Roberts Stadium, which is also closed to the public.
Fans that were unable to attend Saturday's FanFare at the Payne Center will have an opportunity to 'Meet The Eagles' on Saturday, August 19 at 1 p.m., following the team's practice in M.M. Roberts Stadium. This event is free of charge and players and the coaching staff will be available for autographs and pictures.
