HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Senior offensive lineman George Batiste was named to the 2006 Outland Trophy Preseason Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America announced today.
Batiste, named 2006 preseason All-Conference USA by The Sporting News, was one of 54 lineman selected to the Watch List.
The Avondale, La., native returns for the fourth-straight season as the starter at right guard on the offensive line. Batiste was a 2005 first-team All-Conference USA selection, also earning the honor from collegefootballnews.com. He was also selected as the No. 2 offensive lineman and the No. 16 overall player in Conference USA by the web site. He did not allow a sack in 2005 and led the offensive line with 11 pancakes and 54 knockdowns.
The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946. The winner is selected by the FWAA's All-America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man team and picks three Outland Trophy finalists.
The 2006 Outland Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 7 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and First Data Corporation, is set for Jan. 11, 2007, in Omaha, Neb.
The Outland Trophy has been awarded annually by the FWAA since 1946. It is named after the late John Outland, a lineman at Pennsylvania at the turn of the century.
Additional Outland Trophy candidates may be added during the course of the season. Tackles, guards and centers are eligible for consideration.
