HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Softball senior Charity Butler was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week today. It is the first time she has been selected for the honor in her career.
Butler's selection marks the second time this season a Southern Miss player has earned Hitter of the Week honors, joining Jennifer Fox on Feb. 27.
Butler finished with a .438 batting average for the week, as Southern Miss posted a 4-2 overall record. In Southern Miss' Conference USA series sweep over UCF, Butler went 6-for-9, hitting .667, posting two hits in each game against the Golden Knights. Butler finished with seven hits on the week, including three doubles, to push her team-leading total to 13, which is also tied for second in Conference USA. She also added three RBI, three stolen bases and four runs scored as the Golden Eagles have now won all three of their league series this season.
The Pensacola, Fla., native is one of just four C-USA players with a .400 or better average in league games.
On the year, Butler, a 2005 first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and a 2006 National Strength and Conditioning All-American, leads Southern Miss with 13 doubles, currently tied for the fifth-best single season performance in school history. She also ranks second on the team with a .311 batting average, 41 hits, 14 stolen bases and fifth with 14 RBIs.
Southern Miss is currently 21-23 on the season, 7-2 in Conference USA. The team returns to action on Tuesday, hosting No. 13 Louisiana-Lafayette in a 6 p.m., contest.
