HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy has announced the signing of Jarvis Hill of Bridgton (Maine) Academy to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2006-07 academic year. This marks the fifth signee of the spring period and eighth overall for the 2006-07 campaign.
"We are very excited that Jarvis is coming to Southern Miss," Eustachy said. "Jarvis gives us something that we have lacked in that he is a player who can score from a lot of different places on the court."
Hill, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder from Starkville, Miss., was a standout guard for Coach Whit Lesure at Bridgton Academy this past season. He helped lead Bridgton to a 22-9 overall record and its second-straight New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class A Tournament Championship. The team, for which current Golden Eagle Courtney Beasley played two years ago, finished as the No. 6 ranked school among prep schools in the nation. Hill averaged more than 20 points per game last season. During the season, he was named to the 2006 National Prep School Invitational All-Tournament Team. Hill earned a three-star rating by both rivals.com and Scout.com, and he is No. 39th in the nation among 5th-year prep school players, as ranked by HoopScoop.com.
Prior to Bridgton, Hill was a member of the Mt. Zion (N.C.) Christian Academy, leading the team to a 38-4 record during the 2004-05 season. He played his sophomore and junior seasons at Starkville High School, earning Honorable Mention All-State honors both seasons from The Clarion Ledger. As a junior at Starkville, he averaged 23 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while also being named the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal's Boys Player of the Year that season.
Hill joins an outstanding group of Southern Miss' 2005-06 signing class. Among the signing class are Demar Dotson (6-9, 250, F/C) of Southeastern Illinois College; David Howard (6-5, 220, F) of Wayne County (Miss.) High School; Saiquon Stone (6-6, 200, G) of Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep; and Maros Zuffa (6-4, 185, G) of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel HS in Baltimore, Md. -- who all earlier this month. The Golden Eagles also inked three early period signees, including Gjio Bain (6-11, 230, C) of Northeastern (Neb.) Community College, Dewayne Green (5-10, 155, G) of Mt. San Jacinto (Calif.) College, and Andre Stephens (6-8, 230, F) of Heidelberg (Miss.) High School.
