Softball Hosts UAB In Crucial Conference USA Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Southern Miss softball team returns to action this weekend, hosting UAB in a crucial, three-game Conference USA series. Game times are set for 5 and 7 p.m., on Friday, with the series finale at 1 p.m., on Sunday.
The games can be heard on the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network, with Jason Baker providing the play-by-play action. Live stats will also be available on SouthernMiss.com.
The two schools meet for the 21st, 22nd and 23rd time this weekend, with Southern Miss holding a 15-5 series advantage, including a 9-0 mark against the Blazers in Hattiesburg.
Southern Miss, under the direction of Head Coach Gay McNutt, enters the game with a 22-26 overall record, 8-4 mark in Conference USA. Southern Miss also enters the weekend off its first Conference USA series loss of the season, as Memphis took two of three games last weekend.
As a team, Southern Miss hits .237, with 283 hits, 178 runs, 58 doubles, five triples, 14 home runs, 143 RBIs, 78 stolen bases and 136 walks.
Sophomore Jennifer Fox continues to lead Southern Miss with a .346 batting average, 47 hits, six home runs, 31 RBIs and 74 total bases. Senior Charity Butler has a team-best 13 doubles, which ties for the fifth best single-season performance in school history. Senior Ashley Brenan leads Southern Miss in three categories, including runs (30), walks (31) and stolen bases (20).
In the circle, Southern Miss has a 3.48 ERA, 22 complete games and five shutouts. In 320 innings of work, the five armed staff has allowed 313 hits, 202 runs, 159 earned, walked 188, struck out 223, while holding opposing teams to a .255 batting average.
Freshman Lacey Gros leads the team with a 12-11 record and 2.88 ERA. In 150.2 innings of work, she has allowed 114 hits, 74 runs, 62 earned, walked 102, struck out 139, while holding opposing hitters to a .209 batting average. Senior Danielle Wymer has a team-best two shutouts, while sophomore Krystal Crooks and freshman Samantha Davis each have single saves on the year.
UAB, under the direction of Head Coach Marla Townsend, stands 24-16 overall, 10-5 in Conference USA. The current record is the best start in school history.
As a team, UAB hits .258, with 278 hits, 170 runs, 44 doubles, six triples, 21 home runs, 149 RBIs, 46 stolen bases and 99 walks.
The Blazers are led by junior Lindsay Stanley, who is hitting .340 overall, with 48 hits and 25 stolen bases on the season. Freshman Andrea Rogers leads the team with seven home runs, while sophomore Holly Krzan has a team-best 33 RBIs.
In the circle, UAB has a 2.82 ERA, with 19 complete games and four shutouts. In 273.1 innings of work, it has allowed 248 hits, 146 runs, 110 earned, walked 115, struck out 263, while holding opposing teams to a .240 batting average.
Sophomore Jennifer Nelson has a staff-best 1.77 ERA, 11-7 record and 11 complete games. In 130.2 innings of work, she has struck out 157, against 33 walks, while holding opposing hitters to a .205 batting average. She struck out a UAB school record 16 earlier this season against Tulsa. Freshman Kayla Harris, the current Co-Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, has a staff-best two shutouts.
Following the UAB series, Southern Miss returns to action in its final non-conference game of the season, April 19, hosting Southeastern La., in a 7 p.m., contest at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
