Basketball Falls In Quarterfinal Round To UTEP, 66-47

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss men's basketball team dropped a 66-47 game to UTEP in the quarterfinal round of the 2006 Conference USA Championships Presented by Aeropostale, Thursday, at the FedExForum, here in Memphis, Tenn.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles end the season with a 10-21 overall record, while the Miners advance to play UAB in the semifinals of the four-day event.
Southern Miss took the early 2-0 lead in the first few second of play, but UTEP quickly took over the lead two baskets later and led throughout, opening up a 33-20 advantage in the first half.
It was more of the same in the second, as Southern Miss never got any closer than nine points. UTEP led by as many as 19 points with six minutes to go and held on to that advantage in the game.
Mildon Ambres paced Southern Miss with nine points and nine rebounds, while Courtney Beasley added eight points. Craig Craft finished with seven.
Jason Williams had a game-high 14 points for UTEP, while Edgar Moreno and Miguel Ayala added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
