Softball To Host In-State Rival Ole Miss Thursday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team, in the midst of a seven-game homestand, hosts in-state rival Ole Miss Thursday, in a doubleheader set for 5 and 7 p.m.
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network by logging on to SouthernMiss.com, with Jason Baker providing the play-by-play. Live stats for the game will also be available on SouthernMiss.com.
Thursday's doubleheader marks the 12th and 13th meeting between the two schools, with Southern Miss holding a 6-5 series advantage. The two teams have split a doubleheader in each meeting in Hattiesburg (2000, 2002 and 2004). Ole Miss claimed a pair of games last season in Oxford.
Southern Miss enters the game with a 15-16 overall record, 2-1 mark in Conference USA, following a league series opening victory over Marshall.
As a team, Southern Miss hits .237, with 181 hits, 42 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 88 RBIs, 79 walks and 47 stolen bases. The Lady Eagles lead Conference USA in doubles and triples, ranks second in hits, stands third in runs scored and walks, fifth in total bases and fourth in RBIs.
Sophomore Jennifer Fox continues to lead the team in multiple categories, including batting average (.345), hits (30), home runs (four), RBIs, (17) and total bases (49). In addition, she is tied for second in Conference USA in total bases, tied for fourth in hits, ninth in RBIs, tied for ninth in home runs and tied for fifth in doubles. Senior Charity Butler leads the team and Conference USA with nine doubles, while Ashley Brenan leads the team and Conference USA with 22 walks, while leading the team with 13 stolen bases, good for second in the league in that category.
In the circle, the team has a 3.18 ERA, with 15 complete games and five shutouts. In 207.0 innings of work, it has allowed 187 hits, 115 runs, 94 earned, 122 walks, 150 strikeouts, while opponents are only hitting .243 against it on the year.
Freshman Lacey Gros leads the team with a 9-8 record and 10 complete games. She threw a career-high 12 innings against Marshall on Saturday. In a team-high 105.2 innings of work, she has allowed 83 hits, 57 runs, 46 runs, walked 65, struck out 100, while opposing batters hit .214 against her. Gros ranks third in Conference USA in strikeouts, tied for third in batters struck out looking, second in innings pitched, tied for second in wins and seventh in opposing team batting average. Freshman Samantha Davis leads the team with one save, earning it against No. 24 Mississippi State on March 7.
Ole Miss enters the game with a 9-17 record under first-year head coach Missy Dickerson. The Lady Rebels won a pair of games on Tuesday, defeating Stephen F. Austin 2-0 and 1-0.
As a team, Ole Miss hits .235, with 151 hits, 69 runs, 26 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 62 RBIs, 48 walks and 23 stolen bases.
Lisa Conchos leads the team with a .338 team, 26 hits and 12 runs. Lauren Rowe and Rebecca McIntire each have a team-high five doubles, while Rowe leads the team with three home runs and 13 RBIs.
In the circle, the team has an ERA of 2.18, with 19 complete games and five shutouts. In 167.1 innings, it has allowed 144 hits, 87 runs, 52 earned, 77 walks and 139 strikeouts. Opposing teams hit .226 against it on the year.
Mary Jana Callahan leads the team with 89 innings pitched, 68 strikeouts and 12 complete games. She has a 4-10 record and 2.28 ERA so far this season. Dana Brill has a team-best 1.68 ERA and three shutouts.
Following Thursday's doubleheader, Southern Miss has the weekend off, before return to action on March 22, hosting Troy in a doubleheader set for 5 and 7 p.m.
