HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team wrapped up its opening week of the 2006 spring season with a two-and-a-half hour practice, Saturday, at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The workout was the fourth of the week and first in full pads, and Head Coach Jeff Bower has been pleased with the overall work this week.
"I've liked our enthusiasm, and the fact that we've practiced hard," Bower said. "The attitude has been very good, and anytime you have that, you will continue to make strides and get closer to your goals and objectives for the spring."
While the team has put out a great effort over the first week, Bower is eager to see his team continue to improve over the course of the spring and during upcoming scrimmage days.
"You evaluate every practice, and that is important in how you practice and how you perform," Bower said. "I'll know a little bit more after we go live scrimmages. I have been pleased with our defensive line; I think we have made some progress there."
Now the team will take two days off and return to the field on Tuesday, March 14. Practices will follow on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Following this next week, seven practices will remain of the NCAA-mandated 15 practices for the spring season. The Annual Black and Gold Spring Game, which concludes spring workouts, is set for April 1.
