Basketball Breaks Skid, Tops UCF, 59-51, Wednesday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak, Wednesday, defeating visiting UCF, 59-51, at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Golden Eagles improved to 8-15 overall with the win and 2-6 in Conference USA play, while the Golden Knights fell to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
From the first bucket by UCF to open the game 2-0, the score remained close throughout the first half, with UCF building a three-point lead at the 10:52 mark. A jumper by David Cornwell, followed by a Jarekus Singleton layup, cut the Golden Knights' lead to two, 16-14 with 7:35 left.
By the end of the first half, the Golden Eagles found themselves down, 25-21 with Singleton leading Southern Miss with six points.
Two free throws by Travis Hall opened the second half, allowing the Golden Eagles to cut the Golden Knights' lead to 25-23. UCF would continue to build their lead as high as seven points, 35-28, with 14:07 remaining. Southern Miss, however, would tie the game, 36-36, on an 8-0 run capped off by a three-point basket by Craig Craft at the 12:06 mark.
With the game tied again at 40, Southern Miss would take the lead for good at the 6:47 mark with a two-point bucket by Courtney Beasley, 42-40. After the basket, the Golden Eagles would hold onto the lead for good, winning, 59-51.
Mildon Ambres and Hall led the team with 11 points each. Jason Forte led the team with eight rebounds.
Mike O'Donnell led UCF with 19 points, followed by teammate Anthony Williams with 14. Williams led the Golden Knights with 10 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles next host UTEP on Saturday, Feb. 11, with a 4 p.m. tip off at Reed Green Coliseum.
