Basketball Falls On The Road, 62-57, At Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team dropped a 62-57 decision on the road against Conference USA newcomer Marshall, Saturday, at the Cam Henderson Center here in Huntington, W. Va.
With the loss, Southern Miss fell to 8-19 and 2-10 in the league, while the Thundering Herd improved to 11-14 and 4-9.
The Golden Eagles started off strong in the first half, opening with a 22-12 advantage through the first 13 minutes of play. The lead was as many as 12 at one point, but Marshall cut the deficit to four points at the break, as Southern Miss held the lead, 31-27.
In the second, though, it was the Herd's turn to start off strong, opening with a 13-6 run over the first eight minutes to take the lead for good.
Southern Miss cut the deficit to four, 57-53, with less than a minute remaining. But Marshall connected on 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute for the eventual victory.
Three players scored a team-high 12 points for the Golden Eagles, Courtney Beasley, David Cornwell and Jason Forte. Forte also had a team-best eight rebounds, while Cornwell followed with six.
Mark Patton and Mark Dorris each had 14 points to lead the Herd.
Southern Miss stays on the road for the final away game of the regular season, traveling to New Orleans, La., on Wednesday to take on Tulane for the second time this season. Tip-off for that contest is set for 7 p.m., CT.
