HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team dropped its second Conference USA home game in a row, Saturday, falling to visiting UAB, 87-50, at Reed Green Coliseum.
With the loss, Southern Miss fell to 8-18 overall on the season and 2-9 in league play, while the visiting Blazers improved to 19-5 overall and 9-2 in the league. This was the second meeting of the season for the two teams. UAB won the first contest, 87-73, on Jan. 28 in Birmingham.
The Golden Eagles opened with the 2-0 lead but that was short-lived, as the Blazers quickly took the lead with an 8-0 run and never looked back, pushing the advantage to 19 points, 43-24, at the half.
It was more of the same in the second half, with UAB's lead building to as much as 42, but then settling on the eventual 87-50 finish.
David Cornwell had a team-best 12 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds for his second career double-double to lead Southern Miss. Travis Hall, Craig Craft and Kyle Lamonte each followed with eight points.
Marvett McDonald led UAB with a game-high 20 points, connecting on 6-of-9 from 3-point range, while Wen Mukubu added 12. Carldell Johnson had a game-high eight assists.
The Golden Eagles now take the week off before returning to C-USA action, visiting league newcomer Marshall, Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m., in Huntington, W. Va.
