Wednesday's game will be the fifth meeting between the two schools, as Southern Miss holds a 4-0 series advantage. The Lady Eagles opened the 2005 season with a doubleheader against Jackson State, claiming an 11-0 and 17-0 victory. In the 17-0 game, Southern Miss tied a school RBI record, matching the 17 set against Southeastern Louisiana in 1988 and Pittsburgh in 1999. The team also set a school record with seven doubles in the game.
Senior third baseman Ashley Brenan leads the team with a .417 batting average, as she was named to the Hawaii Paradise Classic All-Tournament team. She finished the tournament with five hits, including a double and an RBI, walking three times and stealing three bases.
Senior second baseman Charity Butler has four hits thus far in 2006, while Allison Bullard had three. Freshman Kristin Pilgrim, junior Melissa Prouty, senior Ashley Davis and freshman Nicole Fontenot each have two hits on the season.
Freshman Lacey Gros leads the team with a 3.43 ERA and has thrown two complete games this season. Opponents hit just .221 against her and she has 21 strikeouts on the season.
Jackson State enters Wednesday's game with an 0-5 record, dropping all five games at the Southeastern La., tournament last weekend.
The Lady Tigers are coached by former Lady Eagle catcher Kenya Peters, who led Jackson State to a 12-32 record in 2005. Jackson State returns nine letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team.
Following the Jackson State game, Southern Miss will travel to Lafayette, La., on Thursday, to compete in the Ragin' Cajun Classic. The team will face Chattanooga and Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, at 1:30 and 7 p.m., respectively.
