Basketball Meets Nationally Ranked Memphis For Second Time, Tuesday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Golden Eagles continue Conference USA play, Tuesday, taking on nationally ranked Memphis at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. Tip-off for the contest is set for 7 p.m., CST.
The game will be broadcast over the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network, with the "Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and legendary coach M.K. Turk calling the action. Air time begins at 6:30 p.m., CST, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show. The game also will be televised locally in the Memphis area by WLMT UPN 30.
Southern Miss, under the direction of second-year Head Coach Larry Eustachy, enters the game with an 8-16 overall record and a 2-7 mark in league play following Saturday's 77-72 loss in double overtime to league newcomer UTEP at home. The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and under the direction of veteran Head Coach John Calipari, stand 22-2 on the year and 8-0 in league play. In the last game, Memphis defeated Marshall, 91-81, in Huntington, W. Va.
Freshman guard Courtney Beasley currently leads Southern Miss in scoring with 270 points on the season, an average of 11.3 per game. Junior guard Jarekus Singleton follows with 221 points, averaging 9.2 per game, while senior forward Jason Forte follows with 206 points, averaging 8.6 per game. Forte leads all players in rebounds, with 111 on the year (4.6 per game), while Mildon Ambres follows with 105 boards, 4.4 per game. Junior guard Kyle Lamonte remains the team leader in assists with 55 on the season, while Singleton and Beasley follows with respective totals of 49 and 47.
Senior forward Rodney Carney currently leads the Tigers with 434 points this season, averaging 18.1 per game. Sophomore guard Darius Washington, Jr., has 310 points on the year, averaging 14.1 per game, while freshman forward Shawne Williams has 317 season points, an average of 13.2 per game. Sophomore forward Joey Dorsey paces the team with 184 rebounds, an average of 7.7 per game, and Williams is second with 150 rebounds overall. Washington has a team-best 83 assists this season, and freshman guard Antonio Anderson is second with 73 assists.
The game marks the 74th all-time meeting between the two schools, with Memphis leading 50-23. Memphis has won four in a row in the series, including earlier this season, 85-68, in Hattiesburg. In all, 39 games have been played in Memphis, with the Tigers holding a 31-8 advantage in those games. Southern Miss' last win on the road over the Tigers occurred on Dec. 27, 2000, 75-67.
Southern Miss returns to Hattiesburg to host UAB, in a nationally televised game on CSTV. The Blazers also are one of Southern Miss' mirror opponents this season. Tip-off for that contest is set for 2 p.m., Saturday.
