HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Preparations continue for the 2006-07 Southern Miss men's basketball season after going through a two and a half hour workout Wednesday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum. The Golden Eagles open their first exhibition schedule Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest against the Lithuania Academy.
The youth-laden Golden Eagle squad, which features 11 newcomers of which eight are freshmen, has progressed through almost their first two weeks and third-year coach Larry Eustachy is encouraged with the way his team has responded thus far through the preseason.
"I really like this collection of players, but we are young, and from the coaches all the way down to our fans we have to be realistic about our expectations, especially early," Eustachy said. "We are going to take it slow and really get a base to this team. I almost feel like that this is our first year here and we got what we have wanted to get here."
The basketball game Saturday will be the first of two contests on the Southern Miss campus that day. For those fans wishing to see the basketball game, they can receive a free ticket by showing their East Carolina game football ticket at the Reed Green Coliseum Ticket Office. The ECU tilt is slated for 6:30 p.m.
Admission for the game without a football ticket is $5.
The Lithuania Academy game is also the first of 20 home contests for the Golden Eagles this season. To order season tickets or to purchase single-game tickets, please call 1-800-844-TICK or go by the Southern Miss Athletic Ticket Office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
