Southern Miss Notes The Virginia Tech Game 10/21/06
* Southern Miss captains for the game were No. 16 Darren McCaleb, No. 22 James Denley, No. 75 Chris Clark.
* The Golden Eagles lost for the fourth time in six tries in Blacksburg and now trail in the series 5-4.
* George Batiste made his 42nd straight start on the offensive line at right guard. The Golden Eagles had started the same five players on the offensive line up until this point, but Travis Cooley missed this game with an injury sustained last week against Houston.
* The Golden Eagles have now scored on their first possession in three games this season (a touchdown and two field goals) after Darren McCaleb tallied a 38-yard field goal on Southern Miss' opening drive.
* Jeremy Young tallied his longest career rush of 34 yards in the opening quarter, which also is the longest rush for a Golden Eagle this season. Young's previous best rush was 26 yards.
*Senior placekicker Darren McCaleb tallied at least two field goals for the fourth time this season and the 19th time in his career that he has collected at least field goals in a game. McCaleb notched a 38 and 37 yard field goal in the contest.
* Brandon Sumrall notched his second interception of the season in first quarter. He is the only Golden Eagle with multiple picks - the team now has eight on the year - as it was the first time in three contests they have intercepted a pass.
* Freshman Tory Harrison made his first career carry, a two-yard gain, late in the first quarter. It was his first game action, after Southern Miss had originally planned on redshirting him this season.
* Conrad Chanove, making his second consecutive and career start, rushed for his best of 55 yards on 16 carries, besting his previous mark of 44 yards last weekend against Houston.
* Southern Miss surrendered its first safety since last year's New Orleans Bowl on an errant snap on a pint against Arkansas State. The last safety during regular season for the Golden Eagles came on Nov. 29, 2001, against Alabama.
* Virginia Tech's Branden Ore rushed for 207 yards, which is the fifth most rushing yards against the Golden Eagles.
* The Golden Eagles surrendered a season-high 284 rushing yards in the game. The previous high given up was 252 yards at Tulsa.
*It was the second time this season the Golden Eagles have had a season-high nine players catch passes.
