Basketball Travels To Face UAB Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Golden Eagles continue Conference USA play with the third league road game of the season, facing University of the Alabama at Birmingham, Saturday, at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. Tip-off for the contest is set for 7:30 p.m., CST.
The game also will be broadcast over the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network, with the "Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and legendary coach M.K. Turk calling the action. Air time begins at 7 p.m., CST, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show.
Southern Miss, under the direction of second-year Head Coach Larry Eustachy, enters the game with a 7-13 overall record and a 1-4 mark in league play following Wednesday's 67-61 loss to league newcomer Rice at home. The Blazers, under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach Mike Anderson, stand 14-4 on the year and 4-1 in league play, dropping its first C-USA game on Thursday at Memphis, 73-66.
Freshman guard Courtney Beasley currently leads Southern Miss in scoring with 220 points on the season, an average of 11.0 per game. Junior guard Jarekus Singleton follows with 9.4 points per game, while senior forward Jason Forte has 9.0 per game. Forte and Mildon Ambres lead the team in rebounding with averages of 4.5 and 4.4, respectively, while Kyle Lamonte continues to lead the team with 52 assists on the year.
Senior guard Marvett McDonald currently leads the Blazers with 270 points this season, averaging 15.0 per game. Junior forward Wen Mukubu has 195 season points, an average of 10.8 per game. The team is without senior forward Demario Eddins, who was averaging 13.1 points per game before tearing his Achilles' tendon. Sophomore forward Frank Holmes paces the team with 95 rebounds on the year, an average of 5.3 per game. Senior guard Carldell Johnson has a team-best 117 assists this season. The Blazers finished the 2004-05 season with an overall record of 22-11 and a 10-6 mark in Conference USA play, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The game marks the 23rd overall meeting between the two schools, with UAB holding a 14-8 advantage in series play. UAB won the last meeting, 83-75, in Birmingham, Ala. In all, 11 games have been played in Birmingham with the Blazers winning nine of those games. Southern Miss' last win at UAB came in the 2000-2001 season, a 64-52 victory on Jan. 13, 2001.
Following the game, Southern Miss takes a week off before continuing league play on the road, traveling to Dallas, Texas, to take on SMU on Feb. 4.
