HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini has announced that the football games with Virginia Tech, originally scheduled for Sept. 16 has been changed to Oct. 21 and the N.C. State game originally scheduled for Oct. 21 has been changed to Sept. 16.
The changes will give Southern Miss two home dates for its first three games of the season, including a marquee match-up with N.C. State from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The non-conference schedule looks to be one of the toughest in the program's history with games against Florida and Virginia Tech, both of whom finished in the Top 12 in 2005. Virginia Tech finished its season 11-2 and a No. 7 ranking, while Florida finished 9-3 and attained as high as a No. 12 ranking. N.C. State won five of its last six games to finish the season, including a 14-0 win over USF in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
Southern Miss opens its season at Florida on Sept. 2, before coming home to host Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 9.
The Athletic Department is working with Conference USA on completing the 2006 eight-game conference schedule and it, along with times, will be released in near future. Southern Miss will face East Carolina, Houston, Marshall and UAB at home and will travel to Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa and UCF.
