HOUSTON, Texas - Down by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Southern Miss men's basketball battled back but the rally fell short as Houston came up with the 62-58 victory, Wednesday, at the Hofheinz Pavilion on the University of Houston campus.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles fell to 7-11 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA play, while the Cougars improved to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Houston held a 14-point lead in the second half, up 49-35 with 8:47 remaining in the game. But Southern Miss went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to four, 51-47.
The Golden Eagles eventually cut the lead down to two points -- 60-58 -- with four seconds left before the Cougars' Brian Latham hit a pair of free throws with three seconds on the clock for the final score.
Courtney Beasley led Southern Miss in scoring with 17 points, marking the seventh-straight game that the freshman guard has scored in double-digits. Mildon Ambres, David Cornwell and Craig Craft led the team with six rebounds each, while Travis Hall had a team-high four assists.
Lanny Smith led Houston with a game-high 18 points, while Ramon Dyer added 16.
The Golden Eagles, who held the 27-22 lead at the half, out-shot the Cougars 41-39 percent and held the rebounding edge 36-32.
Southern Miss now returns to Hattiesburg for its next contest, hosting nationally-ranked Memphis on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 4 p.m. The game will be televised locally back to the Memphis area by WLMT.
