Basketball Travels To Face Houston Wednesday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Golden Eagles continue their Conference USA road schedule, visiting the University of Houston, Wednesday, in Houston, Texas. Tip-off for the contest is set for 7 p.m., CST.
The game also will be broadcast over the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network, with the "Voice of the Golden Eagles" John Cox and legendary coach M.K. Turk calling the action. Air time begins at 6:30 p.m., CT, with the Golden Eagle Courtside Show.
Southern Miss, under the direction of second-year Head Coach Larry Eustachy, enters the game with a 7-10 overall record and 1-1 mark in league play following a 72-63 loss on the road at Tulsa on Saturday. Houston, under the direction of second-year Head Coach Tom Penders, enters the game with a 9-5 overall record and an 0-2 mark in league play following a 66-56 loss to UCF at home on Saturday.
Freshman guard Courtney Beasley currently leads Southern Miss in scoring with 9.9 points per game. Jarekus Singleton follow with 9.4 points per game, while Jason Forte has 9.3 per game. Forte and Mildon Ambres lead the team in rebounding with averages of 4.4 apiece, while Kyle Lamonte continues to lead the team with 49 assists on the year.
Oliver Lafayette currently leads the Cougars with 237 points on the season, averaging 16.9 per game. Ramon Dyer has 150 season points, an average of 10.7 per game, and Lanny Smith has 132 points on the year, averaging 10.2 per game. Dyer paces the team in rebounds with 67 on the year, an average of 4.8 per game, and Jahmar Thorpe is second with 61 total rebounds. Smith leads the team in assists with 80 overall, while Brian Latham has 50. The Cougars finished the 2004-05 season with an overall record of 18-14 and a 9-7 mark Conference USA mark. The team advanced to the first round of the NIT.
The game marks the 24th overall meeting between Southern Miss and Houston, with Houston leading 12-11. The two teams first met on Nov. 30, 1968, with the Cougars winning 92-71. In all, the teams have played 13 times in Houston, with the Cougars winning eight of them. Southern Miss' last win in Houston came on Feb. 3, 2004 -- a 75-72 victory in three overtimes. Houston has won two in a row in the series.
Following the game, Southern Miss returns home to host a pair of league games, beginning with nationally ranked Memphis' visit on Jan. 21. Tip-off for that game is set for 4 p.m. The team then hosts league newcomer Rice on Jan. 25, at 7 p.m.
